CAREC Transport corridors

The CAREC corridors link the region's key economic hubs to each other, and connect the region to other Eurasian markets. The Implementation Action Plan for the CAREC Transport and Trade Facilitation Strategy presents an aggressive investment plan to upgrade six corridors to international standard by 2017. This will result in significant and measurable improvements in handling intraregional, interregional, and transit trade. More efficient trade will support business development, job creation, and poverty reduction.

The corridors were selected based on an assessment of five factors:

Each corridor will improve access for CAREC countries to at least two large Eurasian markets.

CAREC Corridor 1 «Europe to East Asia» links Europe to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and East Asia. The route traverses from the border with the Russian Federation to the PRC via Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic.

CAREC Corridor 2 «Linking the Mediterranean and East Asia» connects the Caucasus and Mediterranean to East Asia. The route covers Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, the Kyrygz Republic, and the People's Republic of China.

CAREC Corridor 3 «Russian Federation to South Asia and the Middle East» connects the Russian Federation to the Persian Gulf. The corridor passes through Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan.

CAREC Corridor 5 «East Asia to the Middle East and South Asia» сconnects East Asia to the Arabian Sea through Central Asia. The route covers the People's Republic of China, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan.
